Spurwink Chuch committee seeks additional member (Printed June 8, 2007)
Cape Elizabeth Town Councilor Anne Swift-Kayatta
made an appeal for residents to apply for an open position on the
Spurwink Church Meeting House Preservation Commission.
The commission will be involved in implementing and executing an extensive renovation plan laid out by a separate committee. The earlier committee which completed a 12-month study of the historic structure’s needs nearly a year ago, identified improvements estimated at the time to cost $260,000 and recommended establishing an endowment of $225,000 for future repairs and upkeep. The Town Council recently approved a borrowing plan that included $300,000 dedicated to the renovation plan.
The 200 year-old church is owned by the town and is rented out to for private functions such as weddings. The earlier study committee found the church’s foundation needs extensive rehabilitation among other issues.
Swift Kayatta specifically requested residents with historic preservation expertise or a resident of the neighborhood near the church would be especially welcome to apply.
