How many of your readers have ever pondered what each has in common with a child suffering from cancer, a ruler and a pair of scissors, a sorority sister and a Saturday in September? Well, ponder no more. I’ve got the answer.
On Saturday, Sept. 15, the sisters of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Alumnae Association, Inc. (a 501 (C) 7 nonprofit) and Xclusive Salon are sponsoring “Take the Short Cut for Locks of Love” at 1124 Brighton Avenue in Portland.
We are encouraging youngsters and adults in the Greater Portland Area to donate six or more inches of hair to benefit children who have lost their own hair to cancer or other debilitating diseases. In exchange, participants receive a new do, a great way to start the fall season, a renewed sense of philanthropy and recognition from the national Locks of Love Foundation (a 501 (C) 3 nonprofit). Locks of Love will use the donated hair and financial support to provide hairpieces at absolutely no cost to any young person under the age of 18 who is in need.
Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority and its alumnae association are historically a Maine-based philanthropic and educational sisterhood that has for more than 30 years spread to college and university campuses throughout the Northeast. During any given year, the sisters are busy helping a number of worthwhile organizations and causes meet their goals. The list of deserving causes assisted is extensive, but this year’s effort is truly a public affair.
The very creative and capable staff of Xclusive Salon has teamed up with KDPNAS Alums to make this a true “hair raising event!” Services are on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning at 8 a.m. with last cuts being taken at 3:30 p.m. Hair must be extremely dry, not bleached (color and perms are okay) and in a ponytail or braid. The hair will be packaged and shipped to the Locks of Love Foundation in Florida. You don’t have six inches of hair to donate? Not to worry! Those with shorter hair (yes… the gents, too) can contribute by having a hair cut at salon price ($18 men, $28 women). All net proceeds generated by the event also go to Locks of Love to help defray the costs associated with creating these wonderful hairpieces that help restore so much confidence and self-esteem to hundreds in need.
Haircuts aren’t the only service available. Sue Lindsay of Head 2 Toes will be on hand to work her magic with manicures, pedicures and other services. Like Xclusive Salon, Sue has agreed to donate all proceeds to the Locks of Love Foundation. You could literally make yourself feel good inside and out, head to toe by coming out for this wonderful event.
