In the particularly important referendum coming up for South Portland voters on Nov. 6 it is critically important that we fully understand the issues, since large expenditures of your money is at stake. Please vote, it’s your civic responsibly, but please consider the following: When a city, town or school district decides it wants or needs a new school, addition to a present school or renovation of an existing school, the state is usually asked for financial assistance. The state acknowledges the request, carefully examines every aspect of it as to relevance, need and the financial status of the city or town’s ability to fund the project. If the state agrees with the community’s needs assessment, it places it on a list for future funding. If it does not, it is neither listed nor funded.
When South Portland last rebuilt/renovated its elementary schools, none was listed for state funding. South Portland taxpayers were forced to pick up the total tab. The present high school project is also not listed, and a “yes” vote will dump the entire $85 million cost on the shoulders of South Portland taxpayers.
Moreover, just over the horizon looms a likewise situation with Mahoney and Memorial Middle Schools, next in line for multi-million dollar makeovers or new facilities. Further still, additional millions will be needed to finance some form of as yet unknown reincarnation of the former armory building.  
It’s your vote and your money – serious money – so please vote accordingly.
