Last year candidates for the Cape Elizabeth School Board and Town Council agreed not to use lawn signs. Inspired by their example, we, the undersigned candidates for local office in Cape Elizabeth, have agreed to not use lawn signs for the Nov. 6, election.
We believe that lawn signs are unsightly and costly and provide only superficial information about a candidate.  Given the number of local papers which provide excellent election coverage, we believe that, on balance, the benefits of lawn signs to the public are outweighed by the burden on the environment.
We respect the rights of other candidates to use lawn signs. By no means is our willingness to forgo the use of campaign road and yard signs intended to be a condemnation of the use of signs by other candidates who choose to use them. Signs are protected by the First Amendment and very much a part of political campaigns.
We encourage the public to tune in to channel 3 on Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. to learn about the local candidates and to read all of our great local papers.
