South Portland School Board At-Large
Karen Callaghan
Alfred Street
Education: 1975-1978 UNH
Occupation: Library Aide
Age: 50
Party Affiliation: Democrat
Political experience: Member of the South Portland Democratic Party and a Delegate at two State Conventions.
Civic associations: South Portland Historical Society
Statement about candidacy: For over 20 years, during which time my two children went through the South Portland school system, I have volunteered or worked in several of the schools and I am currently on the High School Accreditation Team. This has been a labor of love for me and it seemed a logical step to move to the School Board and maybe help my community by using some of the knowledge I have gained.
Tax-reform priorities: Very important
Curriculum development: This is a necessity
District consolidation law: No stance yet
Special education: This is an important part of schools
Infrastructure needs: I was on the Elementary School Building committee and know how important this issue is.
School spending priorities: A friend has called me “Pro-School” as if it is a bad thing. I consider it a compliment.
School spending to be cut or eliminated: That will need to be studied during my term.
Goals to accomplish next term: Listen to voters, come up with valuable ideas and implement them.
