Sara Goldberg: Candidate for South Portland School Board District 2 (Printed Oct. 26, 2007)
Sara Goldberg
67 Pine Street
Education: Goddard College (Arts)
Occupation: Office Manager for family physician
Age: 46
Party Affiliation: Democrat
Political experience: None
General statement about candidacy: I am running because nobody else was offering to do so and I found that to be discouraging considering that education and the future of our children is extremely important to me (and I believe it is to others too). I have no political motivations whatsoever, I just want to serve our beloved city well and I hope that by engaging in this process to learn a bit about how it all works. I hope that the community will support me in this endeavor and feel free to come to me with anything that they believe needs addressing and I promise to do my best.
Curriculum development: This is up to the schools and the superintendents, along with principals.
District consolidation law: A tough thing but hopefully will keep tax rates down in Maine without sacrificing education.
Special education: Keep Special Education needs in line with equal opportunity for gifted and talented children.
Infrastructure needs: Maintenance.
School spending priorities: High quality, informed, innovative teachers who aren’t afraid to be challenged and challenge. Keep our students interested and engaged by whatever methods are the most productive and proven.
List areas of school spending that need to be cut or eliminated: Not sure.
Goals to accomplish next term: Learn more about how this all works since this is my first time serving, but encouraging others to join in also since I am running unopposed.
Issues voters bring up most often: Unfortunately I am uncontested but I encourage others to step in and bring the issues up that matter to them. School spending is one area that has been mentioned to me repeatedly, especially since we have a bond issue for the high school on the plate currently. I would like to see a greener building plan offered, but as I am unsure of the cost of doing such am not sure how I feel about it at this point in time.
