Letter: Say 'enough,' vote bond down (Printed Nov.2, 2007)
Editor:
Enough is enough – at some point the people of South Portland need to say enough is enough. Although the education of children is an important issue, $56 million is just too much for us to handle on our own.
If we are patient, we can receive help from the state for the majority of the bill for a new high school. One of the big problems I see is it’s not just $56 million; we need to add the $30 million in interest…for a total of $86 million! At what point do we say it’s just too much?
I think we have hit that point. Incurring this debt, without help from the state, will hit the elderly on fixed incomes harder than most and will force many to sell their homes and leave our city. As one politician said, “It takes a village to raise a child.”
Why then do we want to tax some of our eldest and wisest out of our village? Spending has gotten out of hand. Please do your part to control it and Vote NO on the high school bond and send the message that there is a better way to deal with this.
