Letter: Keep library quiet (May 23, 2008)

Editor:
Though I do not remember where I was when Kennedy was shot (either one) I do remember “the good old days” being shushed by the local librarian, even after a stifled sneeze.  Now, I teach my young children to use “library voices” (i.e. whispering or quiet ones) or “library behavior” (i.e. hands off each other, walking only).
So why is it that the librarians in the Main Branch of the South Portland library are the ones in need if being “shushed?” Loud laughter and cheerful chortling carries well beyond earshot of the patron hoping to grab some tranquility in a hectic world. Throughout the room, the cacophonic communications, meant, one should assume, only for the borrower are heard.
We, who visit and support our library, know how, ehem, “friendly” it is. Yet the increased level of noise is distracting to say the least.  So librarians, please do us a favor and “keep it quiet over there.”
