District 7 State Senate Democratic Primary (June 6, 2008)
District 7 State Senate Democratic Primary
Lawrence Bliss
Candidate Statement: “Thank you for the opportunity to express my views as we approach the June 10 election.
“I am very proud to have served for these past four terms representing the people of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth in the Maine House of Representatives. I am honored by the faith that you have placed in me.
“Now I hope to represent you, and the people of Scarborough, in the Maine Senate.
“I am proud of the work I have done moving Maine toward a more energy efficient and “greener” future; reducing paperwork and providing assistance to small businesses; protecting children from lead, mercury, and other hazardous materials; investing in education at all levels; and helping to ensure equal rights for all of Maine’s people. I have done this while working with Leadership to make Maine’s government more accessible and open.
“But there is work that remains unfinished. We must move Maine’s economy forward. We must provide real property tax relief, and a more equitable tax structure. We must find a medical insurance plan that makes sense for everyone in Maine.
“I ask you to help me work to move Maine forward by voting for me as your next State Senator.
“I have listened to your concerns, and have worked hard to represent you.
“I have developed a strong working relationship with Representative Eberle, Representative Dill, Representative Pendleton, and Representative Kaenrath. Together, I believe that we are a uniquely effective team.
“Thank you again for having allowed me to represent you these past four terms. Please vote for me on June 10, so that I can continue to work hard for you in Augusta.”
Edward Kelleher
Candidate’s Statement: “District 7 will have a respectful, compassionate and powerful voice in the Maine Senate in Ed Kelleher of Scarborough.
“During his 16 years as a state representative he took pride in his ability to build consensus and pass legislation that benefitted my constituents.
“As a legislator Ed took leadership roles as Public Utilities Committee Chairman and Maine Human Services Council Chair and was a well respected member of the Appropriations Committee. Ed’s success, both as a legislator and in his career in the Maine Judicial Branch, is largely due to his unique ability to convey genuine respect for others, regardless of their political affiliation.
“He has lived in Maine all his life and he understands the very real problems facing Maine’s working families.
“Going door to door in his district he has heard people, young parents to retired seniors, are worried about the same issues that most Americans are concerned about, like the increasing costs of fuel and food. They want affordable health care, and both a good education and a clean environment for their children and their grandchildren. All of these issues are grounded in our economy. As State Senator, he will take a collaborative and positive approach to finding solutions.
“‘I trust that Ed’s decisions will be good for our district,’ says Mary McAleney, South Portland, ‘He combines old fashioned straight talk with progressive social values. I believe he genuinely wants to make our community a better place to live for everyone.’”
