Letter: South Portland paving priorities seem backward (Sept. 12, 2008)

Editor:

Well, I just spent the summer commuting to work up and down Broadway and noticed quite a bit of repaving and construction going on. The only thing is, some of the repaving was on streets that were done one, two and three years ago. They couldn’t have deteriorated that fast, so why were they repaved again when there were other streets and projects that needed to be done? Latham Street was repaved – again – for the second time in three years. Burnam Street was repaved – again – for the second time in three years. Another example is Kelley Street getting brand new sidewalks and curbs while Reynolds Street, listed three years ago in the newspaper as one of the top 10 streets in South Portland with the worst sidewalks was ignored – again. Who sets the priority for these repaving and construction projects? What is the determining factor for repair? I don’t know, but, I think that maybe every repaved street or streets with new sidewalks have city councilors or family members of city councilors living on them or their friends and they cry that their property values are lowered because the pavement isn’t new or the sidewalks are cracked and they need work done immediately and get moved to the front of the line —again. What about us common people? We would like our streets repaved and new sidewalks too. I have lived on Reynolds Street since 1993 and I am still waiting for our new sidewalks. Hey South Portland, we don’t even need curbs, just the sidewalks! At least our street, since I have lived here, was repaved – once – back in 1995.  Still waiting patiently,
