Letter: Consider all criteria for Shore Road (Nov. 14, 2008)
Editor:
Those advocating for a recreation path on Shore Road have disregarded some of the stated criteria for feasibility, in particular the required separation of the path from the road. In some places the path is properly separated from the road for safety, and in other places it¹s very close to the road because of physical restrictions necessary to preserve the character of Shore Road.
If anyone looks closely at this plan, it is obvious that the quest for safety and aesthetics conflict very violently. Without thousands of feet of new guardrail, the path is not safe as designed and cannot be made safe in its present configuration and location. Yet by putting up the guardrails, you destroy the character of Shore Road.
If all design criteria cannot be met consistently and completely, then the path is not “feasible.” I don’t see how the Path Committee can avoid this conclusion if it evaluates design criteria objectively, and I hope aborting path construction altogether is one recommendation that the committee seriously considers making to the town council.
