Letter: Some questionable pick up methods (Jan. 30, 2009)
We, the good taxpaying citizens of South Portland, appear to have been duped – again – by our fearless leaders. A few years ago the city council spent our money on two brand new robotic-armed trash trucks and as far as I know, one recycling truck. It seemed to work well until one inexperienced driver rolled one of our new expensive trash trucks on it’s side causing considerable damage. I think that is when our city council decided to contract out our trash and recycling, giving each citizen of South Portland a shiney blue recycling barrel to put their recycled things into to keep them separate from the regular trash in the green barrels. Well, has anyone paid attention on trash day? The trash and recycle barrels are dumped ... into the same truck !!! Why are we even bothering to separate trash and recycled goods? Isn’t the city (read: taxpayers) paying the contractor for trash pickup and recycling? Why isn’t this being done? I can’t wait to hear that it is being separated wherever they take it to because that would make no sense at all. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t feel I am on this. I think it is all being taken to one location and burned since it isn’t being separated when picked up. I would love to hear if anyone else thinks this contract is a waste of our money. I am sure the city council will have their spin doctors working on their response after reading this. I can’t wait.
