Letter: Wait until trash, recycling bins are full (March 13, 2009)
Editor:
With regard to the recent letters and responses about waste management practices in South Portland: A way to improve the efficiency of our system is for people to place their trash and recycling bins on the street only when they are full. The waste management trucks require a tremendous amount of energy (and thus money) to accelerate to and from each stop. If the amount of stops were reduced because there were fewer bins, then we would be saving time, energy, and money. I know that not all households can wait two weeks, and in the summertime there may be some stinky consequences; but if we can at least acknowledge the option – and do it when possible – that would be an improvement.
