Letter: ‘Long live’ Chick (April 24, 2009)
The Chick Wilder monument was erected by Pamela Wall Nolan and Suzan Thompson Smith on Sept. 10, 1994 at a special ceremony. It was approved by Dana Andersen in February 1994. We told him we would like to have it done on his birthday, which was in September. He said it probably couldn’t be done by then but we did it.
We had a Willard Beach scene printed on T-shirts with ‘Remember Chick.’ They went all the over the world because parents etc. sent them to their kids and others who knew or grew up with him. That is how important this monument meant to all these people. We raised $1,600. In 1994 that was a lot of money to raise in a short time. We grew up on Willard Beach, only living a few houses from the beach. There were not many dogs on the beach then and there was no leash law then. People didn’t take their dogs to the beach, so they wouldn’t bother other people as they do now.
If something happens to this monument it would mean defacing public property. There is supposed be a video of the whole ceremony at South Portland library. We want to again thank all of you that made this monument possible. Long live Chick’s memory and Willard Beach.
Pamela Wall Nolan, Standish
Suzan Thompson Smith, Hollis
