Letter: Public library is an ‘oasis’ for patrons (May 15, 2009)

Editor:

In these financially stressed times with layoffs leaving many South Portland citizens lots of time but not lots of cash, the library is a true oasis.

I personally visit there two to three times a week. The DVD racks hold some of the best of the best in film history. I have been told that a wonderful generous benefactor is responsible for the large inventory of BBC videos.

It has been recommended by mental health experts that depression can be lifted for a time by watching a good feel good film. All this is free with the swipe of a library card.

When I enter the library I feel at home. I’m greeted by staff who are very busy but each and every one pleasant, helpful and patient, despite the huge increase in the use of this library.

They are the best and do make such an impact in the lives of citizens who need a smile which is always given freely.
