Cape committee explores insurance options
Cape Elizabeth’s Health Review Committee will meet with the town’s two health insurance brokers on Oct. 22 to answer questions from the committee, explain what the town has for coverage and ask about other options.
The committee has been meeting since summer to review health insurance coverage for employees of the town and school department.
Maine Municipal Employee Health Trust is the broker for the town’s health coverage and Maine Education Association Benefits Trust is brokering the school’s health coverage.
After the meeting, the committee is expected to recommend to the town council and school department whether they should continue with their current health insurance or try to put the town’s health insurance out for bid, with the town acting as its own broker.
The town has budgeted almost $3 million in the current fiscal year for town and school employee health insurance.
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield covers 49 town employees – including 22 families – and 235 school employees, including 81 families. The town spends upward of $15,000 each year for each family covered and $5,000 for single employees.
The committee hopes to have its recommendations ready for the town council and school departments in December.
