Cape looks to the sun for pedestrian crossing
A solar-powered pedestrian crossing signal will be placed at the crosswalk between Key Bank and the Coldwell Banker office in Cape Elizabeth to warn oncoming traffic of the pedestrian crossing in the town center.
The Cape Elizabeth Town Council approved $21,000 from the town center improvement portion of the 2008 municipal bond to purchase the signal at its Oct. 14 meeting.
Pedestrians approaching the crosswalk will be able to push a button that will activate a solar-powered sign, which will light up above the road to warn cars of pedestrians crossing ahead.
Sara Lennon, member of the now-disbanded Town Center Pedestrian Safety Committee and member of the town council, said the committee already painted the pedestrian crosswalks to make them brighter and added a crosswalk between Key Bank and Jonsey’s.
