Proud to be a South Portland resident

To the editor:

South Portland citizens deserve to be proud of the accomplishments of its city in the last few weeks. I have attended two magnificent events that leave me appreciating the civic mindedness of our residents.

First, on July 11, I attended the dedication of the Long Creek Air Tragedy. It was one of the most moving events I have ever attended. Huge congratulations to John Kierstead and all those who served on the committee with him. The event covered every detail; those who were present at the scene to attend to the tragedy were powerful, the survivors present were poignant, and the memorial itself was breathtaking.

I cannot say enough about how much this event added to our city’s history. I taught Maine studies with Paul Brogan (who was in attendance) for three years at South Portland High School. We always took our class to this site and told of the tragedy but never did we imagine such a memorial to that piece of the city’s history. I was moved to tears as people spoke and saw many more of that as I scanned the crowd.

Second, the Green Team of South Portland sponsored an event on chemical free lawns with guest Paul Tukey.

The free lecture was attended by more than 100 people, complete with great snacks, great organization and great information. I know it took hours of work and I congratulate Angela Griffiths and her committee for another outstanding event. Rick Peruzzi of the South Portland Parks and Recreation Department was also in attendance and reported that the fields at Wainwright are maintained synthetic-free. He received a big round of applause, as well he should, for leading the way for our city to be completely chemical free.

Thanks to all the folks who participated in both of these events. I cannot name you all, but your efforts did not go unnoticed. I am a proud South Portland resident.
