Ballots ready for Cape Elizabeth town elections

As election season arrives in Cape Elizabeth it appears at least one candidate has a clear path to victory.
When the deadline for filing nomination papers expired last Friday, Kimberly J. Monaghan-Derrig was the only candidate who filed to run for two open seats on the Cape Elizabeth School Board.
Her candidacy comes as incumbent board members Linda Winker and Rebecca Millett decided not to seek additional three-year terms.
The race for two Town Council seats with three-year terms drew four candidates. Incumbent Frank Governali is joined on the ballot by Caitlin R. Jordan, John W. McGinty and James R. Wagner.
Incumbent councilor Penelope “Penny” Jordan decided against running again.
Incumbent Portland Water District Trustee John Brady, who serves South Portland and Cape Elizabeth, is unopposed for a five-year term.
Millett, now chairman of the school board, said she is ready for other challenges in her life.
“While I have found my service very rewarding,” Millett said in an e-mail. “I am ready to move on to new endeavors. In addition, I think it’s healthy for the board to have a regular exchange of citizens serving so as to have a continuum of experience versus new fresh ideas and energy.”
Winkler did not respond to a query asking about her decision not to run.
Jordan said she wants to devote more time to building the Cape Farm Alliance and working with the Maine Farm Bureau.
“I would like to say I love being on the Town Council and Cape Elizabeth; it was a tough decision not to run,” Jordan said in an e-mail. “The Cape Farm Alliance is viewed across the state as a model for other towns; I want to build off this.”
Jordan said her work to help end hunger in Maine and her desire to spend time with her family limits the time and effectiveness she can devote to council matters.
Cape Elizabeth candidates run without party affiliation races are town wide and the two candidates who receive the most votes win the seats, said Town Clerk Debra Lane.
For the second school board seat, Lane said she expects a write-in campaign started. She said a write-in winner must accept the seat or the council will declare it vacant and call for a special election.
