Traffic stops in South Portland over the weekend led to use of a Taser and weapons charges against two men, according to police.
South Portland Police Lt. Frank Clark said officers used a Taser to subdue Jason Marineau, 30, after he refused to leave a taxi stopped near the VIP Auto Parts store on Waterman Drive around 8:30 p.m. last Sunday.
Clark said Marineau, of South Portland, allegedly punched a police officer and taunted both officers responding to the call as they tried to help him from the taxi.
He was face down on the seat of the cab when they arrived and smelled of alcohol, police said. He was warned officers would use the Taser if he did not comply, Clark said.
Marineau was charged after the incicdent with disorderly conduct, refusing to submit to arrest and assault.
Clark said it was second time this year officers have used a Taser to subdue a suspect.
A traffic stop on the Casco Bay Bridge last Saturday resulted in drug and weapons charges against a Portland man, Clark said.
Randall Garrett, 51, consented to a search of his vehicle and police said they found small amounts of cocaine, marijuana and a loaded 9 mm pistol in the waistband of his pants, Clark said.
The search came after he was stopped for suspicion of driving under the influence. Clark said it was determined Garrett was not impaired.
Garrett was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, being a felon in possession of a weapon and possessing Schedule W drugs.
He also was charged with civil misdemeanors for having drug paraphernalia and a usable amount of marijuana.
Officials at Cumberland County Jail in Portland said Wednesday that Marineau and Garrett were released on bail but could not provide details about bail conditions.
Their next court appearances have not been scheduled, according to clerks at Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland.
