FEMA has ramped up the map revision process so anyone with concerns should probably just fork out the $10 and get a flood zone determination.

My sister (Eastern WA state) was notified last year that her home was in a designated flood zone due to a map revision. I did some research for her and found a company that deals in these types of situation (below):

http://www.myFloodZone.com -
(She eventually overturned her flood insurance requirements.)

Don't get me wrong... if you're in a flood zone get insurance ASAP. But if you have doubts or concerns you should get a 2nd opinion.

Comment on Inspiring, involved - Jan. 8, 2010

Awesome!! My local library has a regular sale of their old books, as well as a shop that sells them year round. It's pretty fun to read a book that you know has been enjoyed by so many! If only the book could talk :) Anyway, it's great to hear of communities continuing to support their libraries--thanks!

Comment on Butt out: Town considers smoking ban, fine increase (July 18, 2008)

This is just ridiculous. These corrupted individuals stop representing and respecting those who bother to show up to vote the very minute the polls close. special interest groups and lobbyists then take priority. Our tax revenue is then funneled to these non elected groups for advertising campaigns in segregation and hate. The various media have been failing society at taking the political trash to the curb and we have noticed as you do in greatly reduced profit margins. The evil that was the Second World War didn't die at the war's end, it hid and is now being openly funded and promoted by our governments via the proven corrupt United Nations. Have we learned nothing from the likes of Mussolini and Hitler?? Remember Nuremberg, least we forget....

Comment on Weekly Interview: Miss Teen Maine uses reign to spread awareness about Marfan syndrome (June 27, 2008)

I am lucky enough to have gotton to know Michelle Smith at the NMF foundation in Boston about a week ago. She truly is an inspiration and a beautiful person, inside and out...as corny as that sounds. Not only do I support her 100% in her pagents and her charities, but I look up to her as a role-model. She really is a living, breating reminder that anyone can do anything they put their mind to. She's just amazing.

Comment on Town will install stop signs required for subdivision (Printed Sept. 15)

I live in the house that's placed on the curve that these two "STOP" signs were placed. I can see both signs from my bedroom window and I've got to say about 95% of the time people DO NOT STOP. Including School Buses, Police, Fire & EMT vehicles and even public works trucks. It's insane. Sure people slow down a tad but there are those who just don't give a flying frig. I've only seen a handful of people actually come to a COMPLETE stop and those were people who were lost, young people being stupid and throwing their garbage out the window and doing other mischievous things of that nature & a C.E. Police Cruiser with it's lights & Sirens on. Now THAT one was REALLY annoying.

All in all the majority of the drivers who use Spurwink Ave end with the Stop Signs SLOW DOWN but don't stop. I mean that's what STOP means on the sign right? Not "SLOW DOWN" or "BE CAREFUL" or even "Don't Be Stupid"

Sorry but this decision to put stop signs in was just as pointless, Useless and unwanted as the Development itself is.

-Nora

Comment on Dog owner takes a bite out of council’s Willard Beach vote (June 27, 2008)

We had great dog parks out in AZ. Fully fenced in with doggy water fountains and double gates to prevent the dogs from accidentally escaping. Why don't they have places like that in ME? My poor dogs haven't gotten a good off-leash run since we moved back here! One of my dogs chases bikes, trucks and airplanes so I just don't feel comfortable letting him loose in a place thats not fenced in.

Even in Syracuse NY they have real dog parks! Up there it's sponsored by the local chain grocery store (hint hint Hannafords and Shaws...). All we need is a space about the size of a soccer field, some fencing, and some voluteers with shovels and we could put together something really nice. A space near an industrialized neighborhood where the dogs wouldn't bother anyone. Near a truck depot, or a oil depot or something.

Instead of trying to ban dogs from public places they should be putting together other options for the dog owners. I'd get behind a project to build a new REAL dog park in South Portland. The Millcreek Park (on Ocean St) has a large unused piece of grass and tree land across from Hanafords. No one ever really uses that except for 2-3 events a year... They could easily throw in a few hundred square feet for dogs and not even notice a difference. The dogs are there anyways, it might as well be enjoyable for them to! If anything, a fenced in area would be a great way to keep those little kids off my dogs when I'm there. They already have multiple dog bag stations there. Lets just make it official!

</rdf:RDF>
